The Merit of All Things
A downloadable game
A Role-playing Game of Adventures, Quarrels, great Affairs, Progress, Ruin, Luck, Life & Death, for 2 to 6 Players.
The Merit of All Things is a simple, "GM-full" tabletop RPG which could be considered 'rooted in Trophy' avant la lettre and plays out stories like those of Vanity Fair, The Three Musketeers, and Barry Lyndon. It creates messy narratives with multiple storylines – one or two hours is enough to get a decent ensemble-cast adventure novel's worth of adventure and romance, while the longer-term development of the characters extends over multiple sessions.
Originally written in French by Armand de Porthau, Baron du Vallon de Bracieux de Pierrefonds, published in 1680, this edition is based on the 1750 English translation published by John Smith & Son of Glasgow.
"The language in this game is wonderfully instructive while also being entertaining. Buy this game. It does the genre very well. I look forward to see it at the table soon. If nothing else buy it so you can fall in love at first sight as a complication!" - Evan Buchholz
